Romantic Art Institute of Chicago Engagement Photos

September 28, 2026

Amanda and Zach told me something after their engagement session that made me so happy: they’ve had professional photos taken before, but they’ve never loved every single image in their gallery. Until this one. Their Art Institute of Chicago engagement photos felt like them, from the more editorial portraits to the candid moments where you can see how genuinely happy they are together.

We started their session outside in South Garden before heading inside the Art Institute. This gave us such a fun mix of romantic greenery, Chicago architecture, and art-filled museum spaces. As a Chicago engagement photographer, this is exactly what I love about photographing couples in the city. There’s so many ways to create something beautiful and elevated while still making the experience feel relaxed and personal.

And this isn’t the last time you’ll see these two around here. I’ll get to photograph their wedding at The Glass House in Zeeland, Michigan, next summer, and I already can’t wait to have them in front of my camera again!

Art Institute of Chicago Engagement Photos in The South Garden

We started Amanda and Zach’s Art Institute of Chicago engagement photos in South Garden, which gives you such a different feeling from the galleries inside. Even though South Garden opens right onto Michigan Avenue, the trees, greenery, stone walls, and the long reflecting pool leading toward the Fountain of the Great Lakes make it feel like a quiet little gem in the city.

I loved starting here because you get all of that soft greenery and natural light before heading inside for something more architectural and art-filled. It almost feels like two engagement locations in one. And Amanda and Zach were so easy together, which gave us plenty of those romantic portraits mixed with the laughing, movement, and completely unplanned moments I always want couples to have in their gallery!

Art Institute of Chicago Engagement Photos

Once we headed inside, Amanda and Zach’s Art Institute of Chicago engagement photos took on a completely different feel. The grand staircases, marble details, artwork, and mix of historic and modern architecture are so good for Chicago engagement photos. I love how we can create something clean and editorial in one space, then walk into a gallery and have colorful artwork completely change the backdrop.

That’s one of my favorite things about choosing the Art Institute for Chicago engagement photos. Pairing the museum with South Garden gives you greenery, natural light, architecture, and art without traveling all over the city. As a Chicago engagement photographer, I also love that there’s plenty of room for both the more intentional portraits and the candid, slightly imperfect moments. Amanda and Zach gave me plenty of both!

Tips for Planning Your Art Institute of Chicago Engagement Photos

If you’re considering the Art Institute for your engagement photos, it’s actually a pretty easy location to plan around. You don’t need a photography permit or prior approval for a personal engagement session, but there are a few rules to know before you arrive. I always recommend checking the Art Institute’s current policies before your session since hours and guidelines can change.

Do You Need a Permit for Engagement Photos at the Art Institute?

No! The Art Institute specifically includes engagement sessions under personal photography, which doesn’t require a permit, proposal, scheduled time, or prior approval. If you want to take photos inside the museum, though, everyone will need museum admission.

South Garden is a little different. You don’t need museum admission to take personal photos in the gardens, making it a great place to start or finish your session.

Plan Around Museum and South Garden Hours

Indoor engagement photos have to be taken during regular museum hours. South Garden is typically open during the summer from Wednesday through Monday and closes an hour before the museum.

The garden can also close during major Chicago events, including Lollapalooza and the NASCAR Street Race. Definitely double-check current hours and closures when choosing your date!

Keep Your Photography Setup Simple

The Art Institute allows non-flash photography throughout its permanent galleries, aside from a few individual works with photography restrictions. Tripods, lighting units, and other larger equipment aren’t permitted.

For engagement sessions, this actually works beautifully with my approach. I can keep things moving naturally through the museum while using the architecture, available light, artwork, and the two of you as the focus.

Pair the Museum With South Garden

If you want variety without spending your engagement session driving all over Chicago, this is one of my favorite parts of this location. South Garden gives you trees, greenery, stone, and the reflecting pool. Then, inside, you have grand staircases, marble architecture, modern spaces, and entire galleries of artwork.

It’s why the Art Institute is such a fun location for me as a Chicago engagement photographer. Your gallery can feel romantic and garden-inspired in one moment and editorial and art-filled in the next, all within the same engagement session!

Art Institute photography policies referenced are accurate as of September 2026. Always check the museum’s current photography policy and hours before your session.

Planning Your Own Art Institute of Chicago Engagement Photos?

The Art Institute is a perfect location for couples who want their engagement photos to feel elevated and artistic while still leaving room for those candid, real moments. With South Garden just outside and so much art and architecture inside, your Art Institute of Chicago engagement photos can have plenty of variety without losing that cohesive feel.

My approach mixes thoughtful direction with the candid moments that happen naturally in between. I love working with couples who care about beautiful imagery but still want their photos to feel like them. Love From Amanda & Zach:

“Genuinely we have had professional photos taken a few times before and usually we love about 50% of the gallery, are cool with 40%, and can’t stand the last 10%. I kid you not we literally love 100% of these, I was just amazed when I opened it up! You captured not just us but our joy and feelings so so well. I am seriously so impressed, you are an artist!! 🤍”
